Yes, the Jerusalem Declaration is clear, balanced, and developed and signed by an impressive group of circa 370 esteemed scholars. However, Part C - with its focus on human rights and international law - does not serve the political interests of many in power.

There are some significant but unstated here dynamics to Segal's appointment - internal ALP branch politics.
Gaza has brought to boil an internal civil war over pro-anti Zionism and opposing factions have been fighting a civil war over policy - the invariable outcome has been an uneasy compromise which is precisely why nobody is happy: Albanese is copping it from both the pro-Palestinian and Pro-Israel sides. Over time power has shifted to the Muslim/Arab community due to demographics and the Danbys & Burnses are losing influence.
Segal was always a poor choice since she is tainted by political alignment, even by simply being Jewish altogether. Even if she turns in a 100% accurate report the otehr side will dismiss it as biased by self-interest. They should have chosen an authentically detached person from outside the ALP for this role.
The most fundamental and disheartening element underpinning all this is how the approach of the political establishment so clearly privileges certain lives over others, and certain worldviews at the expense of a more egalitarian ideal. It is one measure of how far the ALP has drifted from a principled and morally based position to that of just another party of capital, eager to do its bidding.
I suppose it was inevitable that a careerist leadership would favour the side with the greatest money, power and influence in the debased political calculus that has come to define the ALP.
When legitimate protest against genocide, grounded in principles of international law is so casually demonised as antisemitism in the pursuit of political expediency we are on incredibly shaky ground.
Is it coincidental that so much of the technology designed to surveil and suppress society is developed by Israel? Tested in the illegally occupied Gaza and the West Bank Palestinian territory and eagerly adopted by governments of all hues in their ever expanding quest to control and subjugate any challenge to the status quo.
