Australian democracy isn’t totally broken and unfixable, but political power is increasingly flowing towards those with the money, influence and access to shape government decisions. Anthony Albanese’s appearance at a $10,000-a-head fundraiser, the widening divide between Labor’s national conference and its parliamentary leadership, instability inside Victorian Labor, and ideological conflict within the Liberal Party all point to the same democratic failure: Australia’s major parties are becoming more responsive to donors, lobbyists and internal powerbrokers than to their own members or the wider electorate.
Neoliberalism has narrowed the ambitions of government, while corporate influence across housing, mining, banking, gambling, defence and energy makes meaningful reform politically costly. The result is a system that rewards caution, protects vested interests and leaves renters, workers, pensioners and consumers with far less direct influence. Yet the solutions are readily available: real-time political donation disclosure, stronger lobbying laws, transparent ministerial diaries, truth in political advertising, greater freedom-of-information access, protections for whistleblowers and journalists, and a genuinely effective National Anti-Corruption Commission.
The challenge is not so much about saving Australian democracy from collapse, but redistributing political power so governments once again fear disappointing the public more than they fear upsetting wealthy donors and powerful industries.
