Maybe I’m being naive but I’m convinced that although One Nation will lead to the destruction of the Liberal and National Parties at the next election and will become the official opposition. One Nation’s lack of discipline and Pauline Hanson’s dictatorial style will cause the party to collapse during the next parliament. What rises from the ashes is anyone guess.
Maybe a reconstitution of the right as Menzies created the Liberal Party after the collapse of the United Australia Party?
The Australian Labor Party gives me no joy. In my mind they have become a managerialist neoliberal economic party that sort of remembers they were a party for workers and sprinkles breadcrumbs to suggest to the masses they care whilst leaving the structure of the neoliberal in place.
I have a relative that volunteers for Kate Cheney who was asking my thoughts about a possible merger among the Teal independents. My off-the-cuff reaction was to question the utility of it, considering the major part of their appeal is, well, being independent. So far, they have succeeded in spite of the electoral system being geared towards favouring the major parties, which has worsened under Labor's recent reforms regarding electoral donations. Rather than creating a party, I think a coalition agreement would be more apt. The Teals, having won re-election, have cemented their place in the parliament, and there is no way that One Nation could possibly erode their hold on the electorates they represent. Moreover, with recent polling indicating that Labor may only just win a majority if an election were held today, there is a strong likelihood that independents will hold the balance of power (this is something I think will galvanise Australian democracy and be a catalyst for greater reform). Thinking purely from an electorate standpoint for the Teals, they would be in a much better position to deliver key initiatives for them. This all said, if the Teals were to form a party, it would be the final nail in the coffin for the Liberals. Malcolm Turnbull already seems to be a high-profile convert. The Liberals seem to be wanting to be more like One Nation, and have doubled down by giving Tony Abbott the party presidency. I'm surprised he actually hasn't joined One Nation, but I suspect that's because he doesn't want to play second fiddle to Pauline and Barnaby.
The rise of PHON proves that the intelligence level of a large number of Australians is devolving. When the parties of the Right have caused all of this, fancy thinking that heading further to the extreme Right will fix things. There's some A-grade cognitive dissonance right there.
Gentlemen, why is the only party with genuine policies designed to bring about social, economic and environmental justice and equity unable to cut through? Of course, I'm talking about the Greens, whose policies would lift many out of poverty and provide the public services that we all need to thrive in this great land.
Sadly, the traditional media is owned by those who don't want to hear this wonderful news. They would lose their hegemony over beleaguered Australians, who have had their wealth potential stripped from them to clothe the emerging Australian oligarchs, if the Greens were championed as Australians' great hope.
ON is feckless and vacuous. They have no plan for raising the living standards of the over 1.5 million involuntarily un/underemployed. Their ignorant policies on the fictional "race" question beggars belief. How can any reasonably minded Australian have any truck with that nonsense?
As a democratic socialist, it is clear that the shackles of capitalism have proven disastrous for the vast majority of Australians. I am working as hard as I can, as one retired Australian, to bring about the awareness that will fuel a better reality for Australians, and that means the end of the privilege of egregious wealth transferred from workers to capital over many decades.
Sadly, the so-called "Labor" Party is failing those very same people. 😠
Yes, they are disappointing, Dolge. Tinkering in the margins is not good enuff. The Krudster had a chance to make genuine change, particularly in the climate sphere, but he got spooked by the threats from mining companies. Today, these same multinationals pretty much control the Labor Government. An absolute tragedy for Australia.
