We certainly need to put Australia's best interests ahead of America's.

Maybe we should withdraw from stage 1 of AUKUS under which we get 2 used Virginia class US submarines.

Instead, accelerate stage 2 under which we combine with the UK to build the newer, superior Astute subs.

We need to control our trade routes, and the Astutes are the best way to do it.

Was it ever Democratic??

YES! Remove US military from Pine Gap and Darwin. Ditch AUKUS. Strengthen ties with democratic jurisdictions in the Asia-Pacific.

I agree we should star to steer an independent course from the USA. But that will require additional expenditure on Defence above and beyond that Trump expects of ‘his’ allies. I have no desire to escape vassal status under the USA to find ourselves a vassal of China, Indonesia or India.

Trump seems to trying to create spheres of influence where the US has almost total control over the Western Hemisphere. He has said before defending Taiwan is implausible. He blames the loss of America’s semiconductor industry to that country. Why are Australians not listening to anything he says ? We will have to create a security structure for our region absent the US. Terrifying but liberating
